What can I say, I'm nostalgic this week [see d2map11.zip]. This .MAP is a conversion of E1M1 or "The Docks" from Heretic to Duke3D. This .MAP looks exactly like the Heretic original but has been enhanced for Duke. For one, the docks are actually docks that can be swam under where weapons and powerups can be found. As far as I can tell, it is a very faithful conversion. But a few problems did arise during testing. First off, the one player mode is very hard. Dave (the author) here chose to replace the Heretic red flying demons with Fat Commanders, and there are a lot of them. Second, the place where you are supposed to get a key you need does not work, though that's alright, since Duke can easily swim and jump to the other parts of the level. The Co-op mode is buggy with cutting audio and teleporters that sometimes refuse to function. Surprisingly, this is a good DukeMatch level, but it's a bit too small for 8 players. I found it best for 2 - 4. One thing I liked about this level was that it has one player support that includes monsters and an exit. I also liked the fast
frame rates. After all, this is based on a Heretic level with no eye candy. I just thought it was funny that this conversion looked more medieval than
the Heretic original. Though I was disappointed that there was no music or graphics from Heretic, and this could have been a lot cooler if it had.
